ZEBRA is a collaborative research and innovation project advancing next-generation energy storage solutions for a more sustainable and resilient energy system in Europe.
As renewable energy sources such as wind and solar continue to expand, one of the key challenges remains their intermittency. Reliable, safe, and cost-effective energy storage is essential to ensure a stable energy supply. ZEBRA addresses this challenge by developing aqueous zinc-ion batteries as a sustainable alternative to conventional lithium-ion technologies. These batteries offer significant advantages, including improved safety, lower costs, and strong recyclability.
The project focuses on the development and integration of zinc-ion batteries into stationary energy storage systems, enabling efficient storage of excess energy during peak production and reliable supply when generation is low. By working across the full value chain, from advanced materials and scalable manufacturing to battery management systems and system integration, ZEBRA aims to bring this technology closer to real-world application.
Building on the expertise of its multidisciplinary consortium, ZEBRA is developing innovative battery systems designed for flexibility, performance, and long-term sustainability. The project will demonstrate these systems in realistic conditions, contributing to improved grid stability, increased use of renewable energy, and reduced dependence on critical raw materials.
Through its research and innovation activities, ZEBRA supports the transition to a cleaner, more secure, and more resilient energy future in Europe.
