Project Roadmap & Timeline

Project Objectives

The project is structured around five core objectives that guide the development, validation, and deployment of aqueous zinc-ion battery technology.

Objective 1

Advanced Materials Development for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

We aim to develop and optimize next-generation electrode materials to significantly enhance the performance of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. This includes improving energy capacity, efficiency, and long-term stability, ensuring the batteries can operate reliably over extended lifetimes.

Objective 2

Battery Cell Production and Scalable, Sustainable Manufacturing

This objective focuses on the design, assembly, and optimization of battery cells, alongside the development of manufacturing processes suitable for large-scale production. Emphasis is placed on cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability, enabling industrial scalability while minimizing ecological impact.

Objective 3

Battery Management System Development and System Integration

We will design a dedicated battery management system (BMS) incorporating advanced sensors and intelligent algorithms to ensure safe and efficient battery operation. In parallel, battery cells, electronics, and supporting hardware will be integrated into a cohesive system, enabling the creation of fully functional prototypes.

Objective 4

Validation and Real-World Demonstration

The project will carry out comprehensive validation and demonstration activities under realistic operating conditions. This ensures that the developed system meets key requirements for safety, durability, and performance, confirming its readiness for practical deployment.

Objective 5

Impact, Dissemination, and Exploitation

We will ensure that project results are actively shared with stakeholders through publications, events, and collaboration with industry and policymakers. In parallel, strategies will be developed to translate innovations into market-ready solutions, supporting commercialization and alignment with European sustainability and energy goals.

Project Phases

The project is structured into three sequential phases, ensuring a smooth transition from fundamental research to real-world application.

Phase 1 (M1–M12)

Advanced Materials Development for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

We aim to develop and optimize next-generation electrode materials to significantly enhance the performance of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. This includes improving energy capacity, efficiency, and long-term stability, ensuring the batteries can operate reliably over extended lifetimes.

Phase 2 (M12–M24)

System Intelligence and Integration

In the second phase, the focus shifts to integrating battery cells into functional systems. A dedicated battery management system (BMS) is developed to ensure safe, efficient, and intelligent operation.

Phase 3 (M24–M36)

Validation and Demonstration

The final phase validates the complete system under realistic conditions. Demonstration activities confirm performance, safety, and readiness for real-world deployment.
